A Vagrant’s Inventory
An incomplete list of items one might take along when walking from Christchurch to Timaru in early summer, with the intention of living off the land in at least a supplementary capacity:
- Medium-sized pack
- Good boots/walking shoes
- Three or four pairs of walking socks
- An extra set of clothing
- Toilet paper and a small metal shovel
- Little gas stove, with enough fuel; matches/lighter
- Minimal cooking equipment, cutlery, dish washing liquid
- A large bottle for water, and a small water bottle to use regularly
- A minimal amount of staple food - flour; high-energy high-protein stuff like scroggin; salt; cooking oil; spices
- Rain gear
- Bivouacking essentials: groundsheet, survival blanket
- First-aid kit
- Civilised things: cellphone, wallet.
- Camera; notebook
What do you think - anything you’d add or remove? Obviously, the number of people travelling together is a factor.

Living off the land = gathering fruits and veges and animals along the way?

A gun?

Not so much the animals, so no need for a gun (plus it’s extra weight.) Maybe a lightweight fishing line (handline + hook + float probably.)
A towel. ALWAYS a towel. (Thank you Douglas Adams.) Not much more than you’ve already listed, in my mind.

Also fruits and veges = dandelions and nettles :).

how about a torch?

Was also thinking about bike lights, in case we’re walking on the road in the dark. And a good knife for dealing with fish, tough plants, field surgery etc.

Probably should throw in sunscreen and a hat.

You could follow Borat’s example and take a chicken :).
On a serious note maybe a pack of cards if a number are going because you won’t be walking all day.
Also as part of the first aid kit maybe some water purifying tablets and Gastrolyte just in case.

If you took a torch, take one of those Faraday ones, that don’t need batteries.
Trademe has them
