Jobs and such
The work at Delta will be okay for a couple of months once I figure out exactly what I’m supposed to be doing there… But I’m coming to the realisation that financial admin is not what I want to spend the rest of my life doing. I think the reason the church job still holds my interest is that it’s quite varied; besides the accounts, I get to play at being a webmaster, writer, editor, PA, graphic designer (don’t laugh, Brehaut) and sound engineer every week.
I tried a few online career tools (Seek have quite a good one), and evidently some of the jobs that might suit me include:
- writer
- artist
- reporter
- musician
- librarian
- teacher
- rehabilitation officer
- minister of religion
- interpreter/translator
I think I’ll put the question out there: based on what you know of me, what sorts of jobs do you think I’d enjoy doing?

Make up your dream job based on the things you like doing (say, writing and illustrating school music books for troubled kids who need Jesus) then figure out a way to earn a living doing that.
(Says someone equally directionless :-P)

Also, those books need to be multilingual and should reference current events.

Yeah, I wouldn’t put too much faith in a compy spitting out faceless facts based on some yes/no questions. Look more at your specific skills (i.e. writing, analysis, talking with people, etc etc that kind of stuff) and try matching them to activities / jobs you enjoy (or might enjoy) doing (she says, blatantly letting out company secrets and also being fairly directionless :P)
But yeah, you’re fairly methodical and hardworking as well as creative, so i can see you being a writer. Library jobs, I should warn you, involve a disturbing amount of customer service (retail style).
I reckon you could also do the whole muso, artist or minister thing, too. Perhaps you could write contemplative devotional stuff that is interspersed with music and art? And is actually well-written and not entirely banal?
Yeah.

You’re pretty sweet at cooking, and seem to enjoy it. Start a cafe? (seen the movie ’stranger than fiction’? I have the chick in that movie somewhat in mind.) And sometimes do your own live music set? And somehow incorporate saving the world? Like, I dunno, make it an all-organic vegetarian menu using ingredients you’ve grown out the back (there’s a growing market for conscience-approved food, after all), and feed some homeless people or employ some random street kids, and use the place as a venue for hosting public debates about current issues… or something

That would be so awesome.
I’m also thinking about going back to uni and doing a Grad. Dip. Arts in English.

Jim wants to open a cafe — you should talk to him about it.

There does seem to be a fair few of our generation who are directionless in terms of what to do with their lives career wise. I sense that there is a desire to live meaningfully, non-pollutingly, healthily and social justice mindedly but there is much dissillusionment about how specifically to do this. I think you are doing the right thing Fraser by not sitting on your hands until something happens to come your way that tickles your fancy but instead trying things out that fit your values, like slaving away for us at Delta (which is muchly appreciated by the way)!
