Story ideas

February 16th, 2008 by Fraser

I want to write something a bit longer than a short story - say 20,000 words or so - but I’m stumped as to what to write about. Characters are easy for me, but plot is tough! So, I’m opening the floor for suggestions. Let’s make a deal: you guys post your plot ideas, and if there’s one (or more) that I really like, I promise I’ll turn it into a book.

Come on, it’ll be great!

It is always fun and considered clever to do a modern retelling of a classic story or plot.

A young member of a smallish race has to go on a long journey with several companions to destroy a magical artifact, so that someone else doesn’t get it and enslave the world- encountering lots of foes on the way?

How much do you care about university politics and the staff cuts?

    Jim - you’re fired!

era - approximately to the degree that it might affect me.

why fire me? Era’s the one who suggested retelling a classic story or plot :P
How about a farm boy goes on a journey with an old wise type to save a princess from an evil, corrupt government and meets mercenaries who actually turn out to be heroic on the way?
Oh, and it should be set in space.
    Just cos.

Sorry I haven’t commented before … um, well, your strength seems to lie (as far as I can tell from the work I’ve seen) in character-driven stories. I would recommend starting with a character you are interested in and following him or her through one day - just one day. See what happens. :)
